The profession helps to encourage development and facilitate recovery, enabling people to stay in work while helping them remain independent for as long as possible.

Pilates

An exercise regimen that is typically performed on a floor mat or with the use of specialized apparatus and aims to improve flexibility and stability by strengthening the muscles and especially the torso-stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and lower back. Physio led pilates merges an expert knowledge of anatomy and muscle dysfunction in its role in injury and pain to guide the exercise

Hand therapy is the non-surgical management of hand disorders and injuries using physical methods such as exercise, splinting and wound care. Hand therapists also treat other upper limb disorders that affect hand function. Hand therapy is the non-surgical management of hand disorders and injuries using physical methods such as exercise, splinting and wound care. Hand therapists also treat other upper limb disorders that affect hand function.

Our hand therapists also undertake diagnosis and treatment of common hand disorders, including injections and requesting and interpretation of x-rays.

Hand therapy brings together techniques of occupational therapy (scar management, retraining, splinting, advice on activities of daily living) and physiotherapy (joint mobilisations, stretching, active and resisted exercises, ultrasound). The hand therapist can assist with emotional and psychological support, as well as with restoration of hand function.

Hand therapy has a crucial role in the recovery from injury of the hand or wrist, and in the recovery from hand surgical operations. Hand therapy is integrated into the hand surgery team.

Mrs Isobel Heppenstall
(She/Her/Hers) Bsc (hons) MSc Physiotherapy, BAHT

Issy qualified in 2000 from King’s College London. Since graduating she has worked in several NHS settings at a senior level, specialising firstly in trauma and orthopaedics, then splitting her time between private and NHS settings treating musculoskeletal injuries. She has worked in semi- professional rugby.

Her specialist interests include neck, upper limb and hand injuries. She has a high level of experience in all hand injuries and management. Issy is our lead clinician, she set up the practice after noticing a lack of quality in the private sector of physio. After hearing one too many times “physios just give exercises” she made the leap from the NHS to change people’s opinion by offering a high quality hands-on service she knew physios could do. In 2017 Issy completed her masters in advanced diagnostics allowing her to interpret and order scans, blood tests and a range of diagnostic “doctor-things”.

In over 20 years she has seen a high volume of patients ranging from complex issues and post op rehab to little niggles. Her sunny nature means she often cheers up her clients and gives them the gentle push to get better. She has 2 sporty teenagers so is great with kids and their injuries.

Mrs Bettine Seaward
(She/Her/Hers)

Bea has over 30 years experience working in hands and plastics, starting at Stoke Mandeville, then Chelsea and Westminster and East Grinstead. She now leads the hand service of Epsom and St Hellier as well as working for Nutwood.

Bea can treat any aspect of hand injury, surgery or problem. She is the calm caring one of the practice with an empathetic nature which makes her patients feel supported and looked after.

Bea is often seen walking Georgie the dog, gardening and has 2 grown up children. ______________

Mrs Fiona Threlfell
(She/Her/Hers)

Fiona qualified in 2003 from Coventry University. Fiona works at Nutwood and the regional specialist hand centre for the NHS. She sees a range of complex hand trauma and elective surgery – no severity of injury phases her. She has expert splinting skills and experience with wound care, scar management and rehab. At present she is working towards her hand therapist accreditation. Her specialist areas of interest include all aspects of hand injury/elective procedures and treatment of the neurological conditions affecting the hand.

Fi has two young children so is great with kids when injured. She is a keen skier and loves her bootcamps. Fi is straight talking northerner who will lead you through your rehab encouraging you to get better whilst making sure the advice is safe to protect your injured or painful hand.

Miss Florence Turner
(She/Her/Hers) Bsc (hons)

Florence qualified in 2015 at Birmingham University but her career started age 16 when she joined Issy on work experience. Issy spotted how switched on and sparky she was and has since supported her through the university, junior rotations and eventually convinced her to jump from the NHS and join us permanently. At uni Flo qualified as a massage therapist (all whilst studying for a physio degree) and can offer stand-alone massage appointments. She has worked in a busy outpatients department seeing a high volume of patients, She has worked in elderly rehab in the community treating a range of balance, strength and rehab issues. She has also worked in semi professional rugby. Flo’s expertise is in movement analysis, finding what’s not working or overworking and impacting on why injuries occur or don’t settle. Her clinical interest areas are lumbar spine and lower limb.

Flo has the cutest little twins and she can mainly be found on a horse competing in dressage – she has a large clientele of equestrian patients who love her in depth understanding of their needs. Lastly in her wealth of skills, Flo is a pilates instructor, she offers 1-1 physio led pilates, will often add an element of pilates in your homework and she runs small classes in local locations
